When a person’s kidneys fail to work often times their only choice is to rely on a machine to clean their blood for them. In order to receive this treatment most dialysis patients have their less dominant arm “revamped” in order to accommodate the “life-saving” hemodialysis process. But what happens when this very process they depend on for a second chance at life, causes death?

Frank Robinson went in for his scheduled dialysis on June 22, 2012 at the Fresenius Medical Care Center on North Kilpatrick Avenue in Chicago. However, when the staff failed to monitor Robinson’s arteriovenous fistula, it eroded which lead to a hemorrhage, causing his death the following day.

His loved ones shock and grief was worsened only by the fact that this could have been prevented. Special administrator to Robinson’s estate, a Ms. Bernice Herrera, is seeking legal guidance on the family’s behalf for action against Fresenius Medical Care, as well as a handful of other Fresenius companies.

Other cases of negligence include Renal patients with weakening hearts due to the lack or inconsistency in bicarbonate buffers – these are vital in keeping dialysis patients from having a stroke or heart attack. When this is not monitored properly it can lead to metabolic alkalosis (a deadly side effect due to bicarbonate overdose). Although, these conditions were once rare, families are losing loved-ones because of the doctors’, nurses’ and the facilities’ negligence, leading to a flood of lawsuits being filed. When will it end? When caregivers stop treating “routine procedures” as if they are just that…routine.
