What is Prescription Testosterone?

Prescription testosterone is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, loss of sex drive, and fatigue in men. These symptoms are common among men suffering from a condition known as hypogonadism. This condition occurs when a man’s body does not create enough testosterone. This can be a result of problems in the pituitary gland or the testicles.

Testosterone is a hormone that regulates many masculine functions and is responsible for male growth and development. As the body ages, it begins to produce less and less of the hormone being present in the body.

Prescription testosterone has become increasingly popular over the past few years. It is estimated around 5% of men in their 60s are taking some form of prescription testosterone. This is a booming industry that has experienced massive growth.

There are a few different ways that prescription testosterone can be administered. It can come in a gel form or a patch in which the patient would rub the gel or place the patch on the body. Testosterone can also be injected into the body. It is also possible to take prescription testosterone in pill form.

Common Testosterone Side Effects

There are a number of serious side effects associated with the use of prescription testosterone. One of the most dangerous and common side effects is the increased risk of heart attack. It was found that in men over 50, the risk of heart attack in those taking prescription testosterone is nearly double than that of men not taking prescription testosterone.

The FDA has taken these risks of heart attack into account and has begun investigating the potential dangers associated with using prescription testosterone. They are currently investigating the potential for increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death.

It has also been discovered that prescription testosterone can lead to a greater chance of developing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis. Deep vein thrombosis is a condition in which a blood clot forms deep within the leg of a patient. This can lead to serious complications known as a pulmonary embolism.

A pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot travels to the lung and gets stuck in on of its veins. When this condition becomes serious, it can lead to fainting and sometimes death. In less severe cases, it can cause difficulty breathing and an increased heart rate.

By taking prescription testosterone, men increase their chances of developing prostate cancer as well. Prescription testosterone has been linked to enlarged prostates and a number of prostate problems.

Criticism and Lawsuits

While prescription testosterone does have the potential to treat many of the conditions associated with aging and a lower amount of testosterone, the serious side effects have lead many people to speculate that its risks are greater than its benefits.

Many critics claim that the majority of people that are prescribed prescription testosterone are not suffering from malfunctioning pituitary glands or testicles. They claim that those suffering from “Low T” are actually just experiencing the normal effects of aging. These critics claim that pharmaceutical companies manufactured the condition as a means to increase drug sales and profits. Many men that take prescription testosterone want more energy and an increased sex drive regardless of whether or not they suffer from hypogonadism.

The serious side effects have also lead to a number of lawsuits being filed against the companies that manufacture these prescription testosterone drugs. Many doctors feel that increasing testosterone levels poses a significant health risk. Two men suffered from strokes after taking one of the more popular prescription testosterone drugs known as Androgel.

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed after those taking the drug experienced heart attacks and strokes. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has grouped all of these lawsuits together and it is expected many more will be filed in the coming months.
