The Unlocked Cellphone Law, known formally as the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act, was passed by President Obama on August 1st, 2014. The decision overturned a 2013 ruling, which made it illegal for consumers to unlock their cellphone without permission from their phone carrier.
The new law represents a small shift in power from corporation to consumer. That shift is further represented in the fact that the law began as an online petition.
