A random test by the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration found peanut butter contaminated with Salmonella.
According to the FDA:
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
nSpired Natural Foods is the peanut butter manufacturer whose peanut butter was contaminated. Since being alerted, they have voluntarily began a recall. nSpired Natural Foods’ peanut butter products are distributed to food brands, such as Arrowhead Mills, and to national retailers, such as Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.
Peanut butter lovers and parents are urged to visit the FDA’s recall page in order to see if they are at risk.
