Can altered DNA be the best answer to tackling HIV?
Californian researchers are eager to start human trials to establish the validity of a potential HIV-Vaccine.
Their brand new hiv/std treatment method has proven to have been successful in monkeys. Their study showed that for 34 weeks the monkeys were protected from all forms of the virus.
How it Works
The treatment works by introducing a coded section of DNA into healthy muscle cells. The DNA has codes in it to train the muscle cells to fight DNA. Once the body’s cells accept the new code, the ability to fight HIV is pumped through the blood supply.
Possible Reservations
The treatment sets up an artificial chain of cells that work to fight the HIV continuously. This may, or may not, take a toll on the patient over time. Meaning there could be long-term side effects. Scientists are unsure of how the body would cope with the DNA when HIV is not present to be fought.
Outlook
The research team hopes for the first human trials to be conducted on HIV-positive patients who are not able to take traditional drugs. This will give the opportunity test the therapy’s effectiveness on humans, as well as
