Is Diet Soda Killing You?

Millions of people drink diet soda daily. It has quickly become one of the most popular beverages in the entire world. One could say it is addictive! Research is being done on these sodas that may surprise many people. One of the ingredients in these drinks, aspartame, is an artificial sweetener that has been used for decades in sodas and beverages for those who are looking to cut out sugar. The problem is that this sweetener may be worse for drinkers than sugar itself.

Aspartame is an additive in most diet sodas. It is a sweetening agent that has been used in food and beverages. Recent research suggests that this sweetener may be causing terrible health problems that will eventually cause death in those avid diet beverage consumers.

Products with Aspartame

There are many products that contain this artificial sweetener. Many diet drinks, sugar free breath mints and gums, flavored waters, sugar free cereals, sugar free condiments, and more all contain this sweetener. Millions of people are ingesting it everyday without being aware of the side effects.

Side Effects of Drinking Diet Soda

There are many side effects of drinking too much diet soda and one of the major ones is the high risk of various types of cancers. Research is now showing a huge increase in cancer for people who have had too much artificial sweetener. The increase is over 300%! Cancers such as liver cancer, lung cancer, brain cancer, and breast cancer have been connected with this sweetener, yet people continue to drink these beverages.

This sweetener is also associated with making cases of diabetes even worse. Many diabetics drink this sugar free drinks because of their sugar levels, but the fact that these drinks is making them worse is a huge concern. Studies have been done for over 15 years stating that the cases of diabetes in these soda consumers have gotten worse because they drink them everyday. Those who did not drink them everyday showed little or no change. For these beverages to be something that doctors started to recommend, this is a scary thought for those with diabetes.

Another side effect of these sugar free drinks is that they can cause horrible mood swings and even trigger anger and violence in people. Sounds crazy right? But the research has shown that drinking these beverages has lead to mental problems and even depression. Many doctors blame the withdrawal symptoms of the sweetener.

By looking at this research, it is safe to say that drinking these sodas can cause health problems. These sodas could be slowly killing the world one drink at a time.

Bacon And Other Processed Meats Have Been Found To Be Carcinogenic

A new study shows that frequently eating red and processed meat can cause cancer in humans.

Americans are reeling from the recent negative news about bacon, a long-time food favorite.

A World Health Organization report illustrates the link between the consumption of bacon and cancer, in addition to outlining the carcinogenic characteristics of other processed meats.

Evaluating Red And Processed Meat

Red and processed meat has been linked to bowel cancer, pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and stomach cancer.
Image: Cuisine and Health

The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) released a report that associates red and processed meat with cancer. The findings are included in a Q&A fact sheet.

The information came after the WHO analyzed 800 observational studies that evaluated the amount of red meat consumed by different countries, ethnicities and diets.

Red meat includes unprocessed meat such as beef, veal, pork and lamb. Processed meat includes muscle meat that has undergone salting, curing, fermentation, smoking, or other treatment.

“People who eat a lot of these meats are at higher risk of bowel cancer than those who eat small amounts,” according to the NHS Choices website.

Meat has also been linked to pancreatic cancer, prostate cancer and stomach cancer. For men who love eating meat, be sure to consider taking a supplement that is good for prostate problems.

However, there is one piece of good news for meat lovers. Beef, lamb and pork can actually be included in a healthy diet if consumption is limited. Red meat is a good source of protein, vitamins and minerals such as iron and zinc if eaten sparingly.

Instead of cutting bacon out of your breakfast altogether, make sure you’re keeping track of how many pieces hit your plate. A few different ways to monitor your intake include switching to chicken or fish or only eating red meat on the weekend.

The World Health Organization Takes A Stance

Health professionals recommend limiting the intake of red and processed meat to reduce the risk of cancer.
Image: IB Times

In light of the recent evidence, it has been reported that the World Health Organisation will add bacon, sausages and other processed meats to the list of carcinogenic substances. The organization classifies red meat as “probably carcinogenic to humans.”

Bacon is now listed among cigarettes, alcohol and asbestos as a group one carcinogen. Evidence shows that processed meats are likely to cause bowel cancer, among other health problems.

But if eating a hamburger is just as bad as smoking a cigarette, the meat industry is going to have a serious problem. There’s no doubt that sales will drop if the WHO labels processed meat as a carcinogenic substance.

Betsy Booren, president of the North American Meat Institute, said that labeling red and processed meat as cancerous would cause problems throughout the meat industry that would take decades and billions of dollars to fix.

Certain Unnatural Foods Like Pizza, French Fries, Cake, Cheese, Cookies And More Are Extremely Habit-Forming, And Likely to Mirror Drug Addiction

Researchers discovered that processed foods can be as addictive as crack and heroin.

Do you ever get a late-night craving for a hot, steamy piece of pizza? The cheesy goodness is just a phone call away. The pizza will be in your mouth in less than an hour. You place the order and anxiously wait for the pie to be delivered to your doorstep.

According to Pacific Ridge, if you’ve experienced these cravings, it’s likely that you’re not alone. A new study has outlined the habit-forming nature of cheese and many other processed foods, paralleling these products with drug addiction.

The Study

Pizza, French Fries, Cookies, Cheese Are All Addictive

Researchers compiled a list of addictive foods ranked on how likely they are to be habit-forming.

Researchers at the University of Michigan, including psychologists Erica Schulte and Ashley Gearhardt, and neuroscientist Nicole Avena from the New York Obesity Research Center of Columbia University provided a list of 35 different foods and ranked the level of addictive characteristics associated with consumption.

The study found that “highly processed foods … may share characteristics with drugs of abuse (e.g., high dose, rapid rate of absorption) … [and] appear to be particularly associated with ‘food addiction.'”

The list included chocolate as the top contender, followed by ice cream, french fries, pizza and cookies. Snack food favorites like cake, fried chicken, soda, cheese, pretzels and bacon made it to the top 20.

According to the data, processed foods are more addictive than non-processed foods because they are higher in fat and glycemic load.

There is one shocking part of evidence behind processed food addiction. When a person eats a lot of highly processed foods with high sugar and fat content, the brain’s dopamine receptors are stimulated in a way that is similar to drugs entering the body.

Processed vs. Natural Foods

Food is not addictive in its natural state but becomes habit-forming after fats and sugars have been added.
Image: Best Raw Organic

Natural foods are not addictive until they become processed. Grapes become addictive when they are processed into wine while poppies gain their addictive properties only after they are made into opium.

“Processing appears to be an essential distinguishing factor for whether a food is associated with behavioral indicators of addictive-like eating,” the researchers write. “Highly processed foods are altered to be particularly rewarding through the addition of fats and/or refined carbohydrates (like white flour and sugar).”

The Effects Of Food Addiction

Food addiction is associated with obesity, diabetes, heart issues and other health problems.
Image: iVillage

Symptoms of “food addiction” include loss of control over consumption, continued use despite negative consequences and inability to stop even if one wants to make a change. As with drug addicts, these behaviors are linked to increased impulsivity and emotional reactivity.

Also, researchers found neurological similarities in reward systems that occur in both food and drug addiction. Food addicts receive increased neurological rewards in response to food cues.

Biology, neuroscience and psychology experts have linked obesity to dependence on food. Researchers will continue to investigate how addiction influences eating disorders and behaviors.

Scientists predict that more than 85 percent of American adults will be overweight by the year 2030. While the cost to treat obesity-related diseases currently eats up 10 percent of national health care budget, experts project it will increase to 15 percent in the next 15 years.

The study illustrates that a large portion of the population — about 1/3 who are overweight or obese — are not so different from those who are addicted to serious substances like heroin and crack.

Only Certain Fruits And Veggies Are Able To Help Decrease Weight

A new study explores the idea that certain fruits and vegetables are more beneficial than others when trying to achieve a healthy weight.

Health professionals have made it clear that eating more fruits and vegetables, in conjunction with daily exercise, is the key to weight loss.

However, researchers have discovered that picking and choosing the kinds of fruits and vegetables to eat is crucial to providing a positive impact on weight.

The Study

Eating starchy vegetables such as corn, peas, and potatoes will cause weight gain.
Image: Medical News Today

The study was published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS Medicine, led by Monica L. Bertoia at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Researchers collected data on the diets of 117,918 men and women in their thirties. The study included check-ins every four years for a total of 24 years.

“We hypothesized that greater consumption of fruits and vegetables with a higher fiber content or lower glycemic load would be more strongly associated with a healthy weight,” according to the study.

While collecting data, researchers took health and behavioral variables into account, including changes in consumption of foods other than fruits and vegetables.

Overall, people who increased the amount of vegetable or fruit foods they consumed over a four-year period gained less weight, measuring at exactly 0.25 pounds less for vegetables and 0.53 pounds for fruit.

Which Plant Foods Decrease Weight Gain?

According to the study, “the benefits of increased consumption were greater for fruits than for vegetables and strongest for berries, apples/pears, tofu/soy, cauliflower, and cruciferous and green leafy vegetables.”
Image: Candidrd

Eating berries every day resulted in 1.11-pound lower weight gain, whereas the consumption of citrus fruits yielded a 0.27-pound lower gain. For apples or pears, subjects gained 1.24 pounds less.

For vegetables, the intake of carrots and peppers was associated with smaller gains. However, potatoes, peas and corn didn’t make much of a difference.

The addition of soy products or tofu amounted to 2.47 pounds less weight gained.

“There are many fruits and vegetables that may be better choices — apples, pears, berries and nonstarchy vegetables,” Bertoia said.

Americans mostly drank fruit juices and ate potatoes, according toBertoia. These don’t really make the weight loss cut.

“People gain too much fat by consuming food and drink that contains more energy (calories) than they need for their daily activities. So, people can avoid becoming obese or reduce their BMI by eating a healthy diet that contains fewer calories and by exercising more,” according to the study.

Kids Are Eating Toxic Chemicals In Food Provided By Schools

While analyzing the toxicity of student meals, researchers found that food provided by schools contains unsafe levels of BPA.

A Stanford study found harmful levels of toxic chemicals in meals prepared and provided by public schools.

Food containing BPA increases health risks for students and disproportionately impacts lower socioeconomic classes who are more likely to eat school lunches.

The Study

BPA absorbed into food products packaged in cans or plastic.
Image: Fit Day

The study discovered that bisphenol A (BPA) had absorbed into the school food supply through the plastic or canned packages. It was spearheaded by Jennifer Hartle, a postdoctoral researcher at the Stanford Prevention Research Center.

The unique study was published in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology. Researchers attribute the presence of BPA to low-cost packaging that is used to make the food preparation process more effective while adhering to nutrition laws set by the federal government.

“During school site visits, I was shocked to see that virtually everything in school meals came from a can or plastic packaging,” Hartle said. “Meat came frozen, pre-packaged, pre-cooked and pre-seasoned. Salads were pre-cut and pre-bagged. Corn, peaches and green beans came in cans. The only items not packaged in plastic were oranges, apples and bananas.”

In conjunction with Johns Hopkins University, researchers interviewed food service personnel and visited school kitchens and cafeterias in San Francisco. They also measured the levels of BPA concentration in different food items.

Unsurprisingly, they found that BPA exposure varies depending on what the students eat.

If students have pizza, milk, fresh fruits and vegetables for lunch, they would be exposed to a minimum and tolerable level of BPA.  But if pizza and milk are eaten with canned fruits and vegetables, students could be getting up to 1.19 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body weight per day.

Researchers suggest that finding appropriate levels of BPA for vulnerable populations like children to consume can come from experiments that measure toxicity thresholds. Although not every species may not metabolize BPA as effectively, the chemicals have a toxic impact on mice at 2 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day.

It’s unlikely that most students consume more than 2 micrograms per kilogram per day, but the study found that those who do could ingest more than half of the amount that’s found to be toxic to animals in just one meal.

Effects of BPA Exposure

Exposure to BPA can cause cancer, obesity, ADHD and diabetes, in addition to hormone, heart, brain and behavior problems.
Image: Stanford

BPA is a synthetic compound that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s.

Today, the food industry uses polycarbonate plastics containing BPA for storing food and beverages, such as water bottles and other goods. Metal cans, bottle tops and water supply lines are often coated with BPA-containing epoxy resins.

Some research has shown that BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers that are made with BPA. Exposure to BPA is a concern because of possible health effects of BPA on the brain, behavior and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children.

The chemical effects human hormones and increases the risk of developing diseases, such as cancer or reproductive issues. Children are particularly susceptible to hormone disruption through continued exposure to BPA.

“With endocrine-disrupting chemicals particularly, there is so much uncertainty,” said Robert Lawrence, a medical doctor, one of the study’s authors and director of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future.

“We can’t tie a specific dose to a specific response like we can with lead. But we know BPA is impacting human health. Animal models are showing there can be a whole range of health effects. This research shows we should take a precautionary approach.”

The biggest impact of BPA exposure is on children who come from low-income families because they are more likely to eat federally-funded lunches. Many low-income students eat breakfast and sometimes even dinner at school. These children could be consuming extremely dangerous levels of BPA.

“Even a dose of one extra microgram per day could be a big deal,” Hartle said. “If this is an avoidable exposure, do we need to risk it? If we can easily cut it out, why wouldn’t we?”

Potential Strategies For Improvement

In addition to urging schools to provide more fruits and vegetables for students, researchers call on parents to make lunches at home.

In 1988, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said that 50 micrograms or less of BPA per kilogram of body weight per day is safe. Today, hundreds of scientific papers detail the dangers of BPA at levels lower than the EPA standard.

The European Food Safety Authority recently updated its standards for safe BPA intake to 4 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day. The EPA has allowed Americans to consume 46 micrograms more than European regulators.

The study authors urge regulatory agencies to follow Europe’s lead and lower safety consumption levels. In addition, the authors call for increased funding for researching the effects of low doses of BPA. Through toxicity testing, regulators can gather concrete data and reduce overall risk to public health.

Schools should follow suit and limit BPA consumption by implementing more fresh fruits and vegetables into the student diet. Feeding children more fresh food in packed lunches and at home is also an important step in limiting exposure, according to Hartle.

But be aware that “BPA-free” items are not necessarily safer, as it is likely they possess other harmful chemicals.

“The bottom line is more fresh fruits and vegetables,” Hartle said. “There is a movement for more fresh veggies to be included in school meals, and I think this paper supports that.”

Executives From Peanut Corporation Of American Will Spend Life In Prison For Selling Peanut Butter Contaminated With Salmonella

Peanut Corporation of America’s top executives, including former CEO Stewart Parnell, were sentenced to prison for causing the 2014 salmonella outbreak.

Stewart Parnell, the former CEO of Peanut Corporation of America, was sentenced to more than two decades in prison for knowingly shipping peanut butter contaminated with salmonella across the nation.

The company’s Georgia manufacturing plant was responsible for the one of the largest food safety recalls in history. The executives were charged for causing the 2014 salmonella outbreak that killed nine people and sickened hundreds of others.

Executives Convicted

The contamination was sourced to a manufacturing plant in Blakely, Georgia before it spread to 46 states across the United States. The plant is now closed.

The top executives were aware that the peanut butter contained salmonella. Because they had knowledge of the contamination, Parnell was implicated on federal conspiracy charges.

But Parnell isn’t going down alone. His brother, 56-year-old Michael Parnell, was a food broker for the corporation. He has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

It seems that U.S. District Judge Louis Sands was generous in handing out sentences, which could have amounted to life in prison for Parnell and 24 years for his brother.

Another co-conspirator, Mary Wilkerson, was found guilty of obstruction of justice. She is 41 years old and will spend the next five years in prison.

Trial and Testimony

Salmonella is estimated to cause one million illnesses in the United States, with 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths every year, according to the CDC.

Prosecutors made the case that the Parnell brothers were aware of the salmonella contamination for years. They reportedly falsified certification information despite laboratory tests that came up positive for salmonella.

However, the Parnell brothers said they never knowingly endangered customers.

“No one thought that the products were unsafe or could harm someone,” said Stewart Parnell’s daughter, Grey Parnell. “Dad brought them home to us. We all ate it.”

Many of victim’s family members were present at the trial and took the opportunity to testify on behalf of their loved ones.

In 2009, Minnesota resident Jeff Almer’s mother Shirley Almer died after eating tainted peanut butter.

“My mother died a painful death from salmonella, and the look of horror on her face as she died shall always haunt me,” he said. “I just hope they ship you all to jail.”

Almer and others victims of the 2014 salmonella outbreak had their wish come true. But in the American legal system, the chance for appeal always exists.

Tom Bondurant Jr., the Parnell’s attorney, vowed to file an appeal on the grounds that the sentences are too harsh. The men will have to serve at least 85 percent of their sentences before they can be considered for parole.

“Given the ages of these two men, this is a life sentence,” Bondurant said.

The Crunchy Truth

Stewart Parnell was given a felony conviction, which marks the longest sentence for an executive in a food safety case.

It’s no surprise that Peanut Corporation of America has been dissolved. But the decades-long sentence is unusual in a food contamination case.

According to the Justice Department, it’s one of the longest sentences in U.S. history.

Parnell is 61 years old, which means that he will be in lockup until he reaches the age of 89. If the full sentence is enforced, it’s possible that he will die behind bars.

“This has been a seven-year nightmare for me and my family. I’m truly, truly sorry for what’s happened,” Parnell said at the trial.

CDC Study Shows More Than 30 Percent Of U.S. Kids Eat Fast Food Every Day

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a new study that found one-third of U.S. children eat fast food every day.

Since the 1990s, about one-third of U.S. kids eat fast food every day. Despite increased governmental efforts to promote healthy eating habits, not much has changed.

A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that there has been no change in levels of fast food consumption or in the amount of calories gained from a fast food diet.

The Study

Almost 35 percent of U.S. children consume fast food on any given day, according to the CDC.

The study, conducted by the CDC, included 3,100 children ages 2 through 19. Researchers asked the children or their parents about the food they ate in the past 24 hours. The survey was done in 2011 and 2012.

The findings show that some people never eat fast food, while others eat it every day. Adolescents ages 12 to 19 are more likely to eat fast food than children ages 2 to 9.

The researchers found:

  • Adolescents got about 17 percent of their daily calories from fast food, compared to about 9 percent in younger children.
  • Black, white and Hispanic youth all got roughly the same proportion of their daily calories from fast food — around 12 percent. For Asians, the average was significantly lower, at 8 percent.
  • There was no significant difference between kids from families of different income levels. Some studies have found a difference, Fryar noted.

Although calorie totals weren’t included, kids consume about 1,900 calories a day. About 245 calories are from fast food, which is the equivalent of a basic McDonald’s hamburger.

“Previous studies have reported that acculturation to the U.S. lifestyle plays an important role in the adoption of unhealthy behaviors, such as fast food consumption, in Asian-American and other immigrant groups,” according to the study.

Effects Of A Fast Food Diet

Children eating fast food every day will be getting an increased amount of calories, which leads to high body mass index and obesity.

Fast food is calorie-heavy, contributing to an obese and overweight population. Drive-thru french fries and takeout pizza are causing a national health concern. Obesity has been stable at about 17 percent over the last decade.

“This analysis found no significant differences in fast food consumption by poverty status or weight status among children and adolescents,” according to the study.

For the last decade, the proportion of calories from fast food has been 12 percent for the last decade, slightly more than the 11 percent previously reported for adults.

“At least we’re not seeing it go up,” said Cheryl Fryar, a study author.

Decrease In Ocean Life Populations Caused By Overfishing, And Acidification Puts Human Food Security In Danger

Tuna, mackerel and other marine species have experienced a catastrophic population decrease, causing a threat to human food security.

In the last 40 years, certain fish populations have decreased by almost 75 percent. Many of these species are essential to the human food chain.

New research shows that tuna and mackerel are subject to a “catastrophic” decline. The study cites problems such as overfishing, acidification from environmental pollution and other threats to marine life that must be addressed.

A Decline In Aquatic Animal Species

Since 1970, more than 49 percent of 1,234 ocean species have experienced a significant decline.

The study, called Living Blue Planet Report, was conducted by World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) and the Zoological Society of London. It concluded that an important family of fish species, commonly used to supply food, has been impacted by various man-made environmental hazards.

The scombridae family of fish includes mackerels, tunas and bonitos. These species have declined by 74 percent between 1970 and 2012. In addition, the research shows that 49 percent of 1,234 ocean species have declined throughout that 49 year span.

The fish populations in decline are critical to human food security, according to WWF. The charity urges action to put a stop to the actions that are depleting global resources.

“This is catastrophic. We are destroying vital food sources, and the ecology of our oceans,” Louise Heaps, chief advisor on marine policy at WWF UK, said.

Threatened fish species include the nearly extinct Pacific bluefin tuna, along with yellowtail tuna and albacore, which are popular menu items. However, the skipjack tuna has “a surprising degree of resilience,” according to Heaps, one of the study authors.

In addition, sea cucumbers, which are an Asian luxury dish, have fallen by 98 percent in the Galapagos Islands and 94 percent in in the Egyptian Red Sea. Endangered leatherback turtles in the UK are also becoming scarce.

The study authors identify specific threats to marine life and ocean habitats, which in turn threaten our access to seafood.

Identifying Threats To Sea Creatures

Overfishing and environmental pollution are the main causes of dwindling marine species.
Image: Stop Overfishing

Overfishing is a global issue, but it’s specifically problematic in the Pacific Ocean. Chinese, Japanese and Korean fisherman possess the world’s largest fleet in both size and capacity. The fishing activities of these countries outweigh even European ocean endeavors.

Since 1970, pollution has been affecting marine health and habitats. A substance called plastic detritus builds up in the digestive system of fish, which damages wildlife and enters the food chain. Coastal mangrove swamps are depleted, and carbon dioxide has contaminated the ocean. This makes it more acidic, which depletes metabolic rates and depresses immune systems of marine life.

“I am terrified about acidification,” Heaps told the Guardian. “That situation is looking very bleak. We were taught in the 1980s that the solution to pollution is dilution, but that suggests the oceans have an infinite capacity to absorb our pollution. That is not true, and we have reached the capacity now.”

If regulators don’t step in, acidification could destroy the world’s coral reefs by 2050. The process of acidification is dangerous to tiny marine animals that use calcium to make their shells and other organs.

“It’s not all doom-and-gloom. There are choices we can make. But it is urgent,” Heaps said.
